French multimedia artist Thomas Mailaender's Illustrated People project transforms this familiar concept into something tangible and visceral.
Mailaender exposes archival photographic negatives directly onto human skin using a vintage medical UV lamp. The process temporarily burns the image into the skin like a sun tattoo, leaving marks that gradually fade with time—much like how our memories slowly dim and blur. The images appear as sunburn-like traces on the body, ephemeral inscriptions that mirror the transient nature of recollection itself.
But the story doesn't end there. Mailaender then photographs these bodies, preserving what was always destined to disappear. The skin heals, but the photograph endures, becoming a permanent record of an impermanent trace. In this way, the work creates a double exposure: a temporary mark on living flesh becomes an eternal image in the photographic archive.
