Fashion photography has its own unwritten rules for the body. Clothes should be clearly visible, legs should appear longer, and every line of the body is carefully arranged to look its best. But in the photographs of French creative Pauline Anna Gudet, the body rarely behaves. She lifts her legs above her head, crawls across the floor, leans upside down on furniture, and sometimes shows the camera the soles of her shoes instead of her face. What makes these strange poses even more compelling is that they come from a body trained in dance.
Having learned how to control movement and create beautiful lines, Gudet instead uses that discipline to disrupt the idea of a good pose. Even heels and dresses, traditionally used to make the body appear elegant, become tools for twisting, folding, and turning it upside down. Rather than perfect poses, she chooses moments that feel awkward, funny, and sometimes uncomfortable. So why do we always have to stand beautifully in a fashion photograph?
