John Galliano, who has long transformed fashion into theatrical spectacle, becomes the subject of a major retrospective at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Opening in spring 2027, John Galliano: Horizons will span four decades of work, from his landmark 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection to his roles at Givenchy, Christian Dior, and Maison Margiela, as well as his eponymous label. Garments, accessories, sketches, toiles, research books, and archival materials will trace his creative process, revealing how historical research, imagined characters, and visual fantasy evolve into wearable form.
The exhibition will not limit itself to aesthetic celebration. The Met has confirmed it will directly address Galliano's antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011, the dismissal and conviction that followed, and his subsequent treatment and public acknowledgment. By placing creative brilliance alongside moral accountability, the retrospective asks whose perspective should shape how fashion history is written and remembered. Can artistic achievement ever be separated from ethical responsibility?
