When sick with a cold as a child, a mother would tuck warm garlic cloves into her child's socks—a comfort that soothed far more than the body. Designer @_cassiaaaaa_ draws from this very sensation in her graduate project, 'Garlic Socks,' quietly yet powerfully stitching together hazy, tender memories of emotional and physical healing through the language of fashion.
The piece consists of a felted goat-hair poncho layered with silk organza stripes, organza bulbs filled with glass beads, and a steel welded cage. Beaded-pocket organza socks and four-layer silk organza striped shorts hang delicately over the structure. Every material moves gently between softness and rigidity, flow and tension, never settling but always oscillating.
From garlic compresses and herbal teas to hydrotherapy, the designer reclaims fragile moments of childhood healing and reimagines them into physical form. The transparency of organza doesn't hide the wound—it reveals it. The steel cage becomes a vulnerable kind of armor, all covered by a final layer of tenderness. What face does healing wear in our memory?
To dress the body may, in the end, be an act of holding the self, of wrapping oneself in quiet care. Through this gentle, uncanny, and strangely beautiful garment, we revisit a moment long gone yet still alive in our skin.
