Charlotte Hope, a BA Fashion Design student at Central Saint Martins, has unveiled her project 'The Borrowers,' a whimsical collection inspired by Studio Ghibli's animation . The collection employs scale and proportion as narrative devices, transforming wearers into fairy-like figures through distinctive silhouettes that challenge conventional fashion grammar.
At the heart of the collection is the reinterpretation of everyday objects as portals to an enchanted world. Oversized scissors, buttons, and sewing pins merge with garments, imbuing familiar items with magic and positioning scale itself as a storytelling tool. A soft pastel palette of pink, lilac, and tender green blooms throughout, manifested in petal-shaped skirts, airy puffed sleeves, and dreamlike ruffles that create a cohesive visual language.
Charlotte's work represents a study in gentle proportions and lyrical construction, proposing a world where design becomes reverie and fashion transforms into whispered dreams. This project exemplifies how emerging designers combine narrative depth with technical precision to establish a distinct aesthetic voice, demonstrating the creative experimentation taking shape within fashion education.
Central Saint Martins, the renowned institution behind Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, continues to nurture experimental student projects that capture industry attention. 'The Borrowers' offers a glimpse into the next generation of design thinking, merging fairy-tale imagination with contemporary fashion vocabulary in a collection that feels both secretive and utterly transporting.
