Three years after its release, Colleen Hoover's thriller novel 『Verity』 climbed to No. 1 on Amazon through nothing but reader word of mouth, and now it arrives on screen October 22. The film follows Lowen (Dakota Johnson), a writer hired to complete the unfinished work of bestselling author Verity (Anne Hathaway), who was left unable to walk or speak after a tragic accident. When Lowen discovers Verity's hidden autobiography inside her sprawling estate, she's pulled into a twisted web of secrets. Trapped within the isolated mansion, three characters become entangled in an increasingly unsettling psychological spiral. Fragments of Verity's shocking autobiography unfold alongside Lowen's disturbing present, layering tension scene by scene. Despite Verity's presence in the house, Lowen finds herself drawn to Jeremy, and the audience experiences every twist and turn through Lowen's eyes.
The heart of this film lies in its meticulously crafted narrative structure. Verity's past is embedded in the form of her autobiography, intersecting with Lowen's present to amplify the suspense. Dakota Johnson's unsettled gaze clashes with Anne Hathaway's chilling presence, pushing the tension to its peak. Was Verity's accident real, or is her silence calculated? How much of the autobiography Lowen discovered is true? The face-off between the two actresses drives the entire film.
While the film is based on Colleen Hoover's novel, it adds a layer of visual intensity unique to the screen. The mansion's enclosed space compresses the characters' psychology, and the audience moves alongside Lowen toward a suffocating truth. The novel's late surge to bestseller status was powered by word of mouth. Whether the film can carry that same force remains to be seen. It opens October 22.
