CHAN is a kind of diary, retelling the stories he has carried since childhood through a fairytale lens.
Titled 'BABY BEETHOVEN', the collection takes shape through the Beethoven scores he often turned to as his way of remembering innocence, alongside pianos, drawings and bricks.
Ahead of the release, we sat down for a short conversation with sunburnkids. Read the full interview now.
Q. Please introduce yourself to <PAP> readers.
A. Hello. I am the director of chapterofchan, and also sunburn, having recently released my first mixtape.
Q. 'CHAN' is approaching its fourth drop. How have you been, and how does it feel with the release ahead of you?
A. As I have been sorting through and choosing among things in my life, I feel the emotions hidden inside me have opened their doors.
Praying over even the shameful things tucked behind my reason, drawing them out, these days I find myself seeking only what His will might be. Things like a release now come to me as a kind of test.
Q. You have likened this collection to a diary of your childhood, Eunchan. What do you hope lands most with those who see it?
A. This collection is full of my childhood. There is the brick pattern, a shape I loved, and the fence too. I lived thinking of myself as the lone goat of the pasture. And Beethoven's concerto in d major, opus 61, which I listened to for the longest time, appears as a score.
Through these things I wanted to remember where I began. These days I meet so many exhausted people. Running with their eyes fixed ahead, their emotions have all run dry. From the outside they look dazzling, enviable even, but look closely and it is not really so.
Somewhere in all of that, Beethoven's life came to mind. He had a way of hearing music anyone would envy, and of course fame and every honor, yet his ringing ears eventually drove him to draft his own will. Looking at that life, I wanted to speak of the innocence and first heart of Beethoven as a child, and to hold it up against my own.
Q. We are curious about life since your debut as a musician last October. Has anything changed?
A. Someone told me their child listens to my music constantly, and honestly the weight of that grew. If I am to be honest with that child, I need to be honest down to the smallest corners of my life. I keep asking what kind of responsibility I should write my lyrics with, and those questions have me laboring over the next album all the more.
More than film or painting, music is in the end a direct conversation about life, which makes it that much more compelling, and that much more frightening. So tending my own life well matters even more.
Q. Where do you usually find inspiration?
A. The things I write, I suppose?
Q. And what comes next? Give us a spoiler.
A. I am focused on the next album, on the stories unfolding within chapterofchan, and I hold in my heart, and in my prayers, the hope of founding a school where children can grow up within the right values.
Q. Finally, is there a message you would like to leave <PAP> readers?
A. Do you all live in order to forget?
