Q. Introduce yourself.
A. Hello, I'm MIRANI! Lovely to meet you.
Q. We always knew you delivered in your day job, but on set the charm kept spilling over. How was this shoot for you?
A. It was fun. As always, a shoot has to be enjoyable for the results to turn out well.
Q. In this shoot you fought to protect the microphone, ‘the soul no one can ever take from you’. In real life, what is that soul-like presence no one could take from you?
A. Healthy thoughts. I think they are what you need most to get through life.
Q. The CCTV read as a device for guarding exactly that. Have you ever had to fight to keep something soul-like safe within yourself?
A. So many times. It's a hard world for keeping your thoughts healthy. When I start to waver, I go see the people I love, or watch my favorite drama, and before I know it, that part of me is protected again.
Q. We're curious whether the styling in this shoot resembled how you usually dress. If anything was different, what was it?
A. Pairing Umbro's sporty looks with a feminine skirt or shoes sits close to my everyday style. What felt different, and refreshingly so, was wearing pieces with lines I don't often try!
Q. Scrolling your Instagram feed, your affection for fashion feels singular. Learning you graduated in fashion and clothing studies was a surprise too. What do fashion and music mean to you?
A. Fashion and music share so much, which is probably why I love them both. What matters is finding what truly suits you. The more I explore the two, the more they simply become me, and watching that happen is endlessly fun. My music and my fashion are just me, exactly as I am.
Q. Your stage name MIRANI comes from ‘Detective Conan’, as we understand it. Do you still love comics? What are you into these days?
A. I still love animation and watch it often, though not Conan lately. These days I'm interested in ‘wellbeing’. I'm looking for ways to live healthily and joyfully. So last week I ran along the Han River instead of the treadmill. It felt completely new.
Q. Does your musical inspiration often grow out of your interests too? What influences you most when you're writing?
A. I draw a great deal of inspiration from them. What I'm interested in changes the way I think. So these days I rarely listen to hard electronic music; I reach for jazzy, calm songs instead. In the end, all of it gathers and finds its way into my music.
Q. As an artist, how much of MIRANI do you think the world has seen?
A. 10%! There is still so much I want to show.
Q. Of all your releases, which track are you most attached to, and why?
A. ‘Daisy’. I wrote those lyrics myself, but reading them again, I still think they hold up beautifully. So many people have told me the song gave them strength. For someone who makes songs, is there any better compliment? I'm grateful every time I hear it. Daisy stirs something tender in me and in its listeners alike, which is why I hold it so close.
Q. What are the people who love MIRANI like?
A. Warm people. Whenever I read their messages and encouragement, I always wonder how anyone can be this warm. That's why I want to repay them with good songs, always. It's what keeps me humble and working hard.
Q. Take this moment to say a word to the people you love.
A. Because of you, I want to make good music and become a good person. You are my driving force. It's a little embarrassing to say, but thank you so much. And I love you.
Q. What thought occupies you most these days?
A. What kind of album to make, that's my biggest question. I'm in the middle of working on one, and it's still hard.
Q. How do you usually shake off stress?
A. I meet my closest friends. We've been friends since middle school. Even doing nothing at all, we have the best time. They are my treasures.
Q. Any plans for the coming summer? What kind of summer will it be?
A. No vacation plans, but there's an album on the way, so things are about to get very busy. I hope it turns out to be a hot one.
Q. Lastly, not as MIRANI but as Kim Yunjin, is there a conviction you want to hold onto to the very end?
A. I want to be someone who can always stand tall before herself. No excuses, no regrets about my own choices, just living well! It's the hardest one of all, but it's the conviction I most want to keep.
