Tokyo-based artist Momoe (@mmemme_daigaku) reinterprets familiar anime imagery in an entirely new way. Her practice involves physically cutting the canvas and stitching it back together with thread. Using acrylic and mixed media, she separates characters' faces and arranges materials resembling internal organs across the surface. This unique approach gives two-dimensional images a three-dimensional depth and physicality.
In Momoe's works, hair transforms into wire, and cables are exposed inside the figures. Some pieces incorporate rust to stain the image like corrosion. These techniques position anime characters simultaneously as organic beings and mechanical entities. Familiar images are transformed into something strange and unsettlingly beautiful through deconstruction and reconstruction.
Momoe's practice goes beyond simply using anime as subject matter—it questions the flatness and completeness inherent in popular culture imagery. The act of tearing and sewing the canvas reveals what lies beneath: layers we never saw before. At the unique intersection of contemporary art and anime culture, Momoe offers a new perspective that makes the familiar unfamiliar.
