Keigo Higashino, one of Japan's most celebrated mystery novelists, passed away on July 23 after a battle with colon cancer. He was 68. Known for international bestsellers including Journey Under the Midnight Sun, The Devotion of Suspect X, and The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, his death has sent shockwaves through the Asian literary community and beyond.

Higashino made his debut in 1985 after winning the 31st Edogawa Rampo Prize for After School, launching a nearly four-decade career that redefined the mystery genre. His works transcended conventional detective fiction, exploring universal themes of good and evil, love and sacrifice through meticulously crafted plots and profound psychological insight. He celebrated his 40th anniversary as a writer last year and continued writing until the end of his life.

His upcoming novel Eternal Memory, the latest installment in the beloved Galileo series, is scheduled for release on August 5 and will become his 106th book and final work. Publisher Kodansha paid tribute, stating, "The stories he created will continue to captivate readers for years to come." Fans and the literary world mourn the loss of a master whose vast body of work will be remembered for generations.
