The Influencer Seen from Off Screen

A ring light hangs from the waist of a model in a black dress. Behind her, a selfie stick rises and holds a smartphone above her head. Clothes that look like an influencer a second before going live. This is the Unreal collection by Dima Monkey, a young designer from Moscow.

Every piece in Unreal is black, and every piece is loaded with filming gear. Boom arms with phone holders stretch out from the shoulders and hems, and tripod legs stick out from the waist. The face is hidden; the equipment is blown out of proportion. The series looks at the gap between the online self and the real one.

The message is serious, but the clothes are funny. A figure walking with a ring light around the waist and a camera on the back looks like the behind-the-scenes of our own selfies, worn as an outfit. What we see from off screen, and what we see on screen. Which one is real?

Dima Monkey named these clothes Unreal. The garments, with ring lights and selfie sticks and tripods growing from the body, might be the most honest portrait of the social media self. We build our on-screen selves every day. But where is the off-screen self? Dima Monkey's Unreal asks that question through clothing. Which do you think is more real: the self on screen, or the self off it?
