The Analog Printer

Danish artist Marina Rønnow Honoré calls herself an analog printer. Her one chosen medium is the plastic perler bead, a craft material left over from childhood. The tube beads come in barely seventy colors. Within that narrow palette she prints images, laying the beads down one at a time, by hand. Up close there is only a blur of pixels and no way to tell what you are looking at, but step back a few paces and an object appears, sharp as a photograph.

What she brings back are things everyone has held at least once. A keyring and a pair of headphones, swollen to enormous scale, hang from the body. Everyday objects like IKEA's blue shopping bag and a supermarket plastic sack of fruit pass through tens of thousands of small labors and emerge as art. With the same material she once pressed flat under an iron as a child, she prints objects that carry that childhood inside them. Do you still hold that sensation in your own hands?
