The Artist Who Sculpts Windows Hills and Collects Digital Ruins

British artist Owen T. Douglass recreates Windows XP's iconic rolling green hill as a physical installation, collecting obsolete digital devices and fragments of online culture and transforming them into sculptures and installations. His works resemble archaeological sites of a technological civilization—except the artifacts are only 10 to 20 years old, not thousands.

While we celebrate the arrival of new technologies, we rarely pay attention to how quickly they fade into obsolescence. Douglass directs his gaze precisely at these forgotten moments. Defunct machines, error messages, and outdated interfaces are reborn in his work as relics of the digital age, worthy of preservation and contemplation.

Through wooden structures, artificial grass hills, suspended yellow folder icons, and Windows Media Player interfaces floating in mid-air, Douglass creates playful landscapes that conceal deeper reflections on the technologies and memories we leave behind. Rather than imagining the future, he meticulously documents what it leaves in its wake—a growing archive of digital ruins that speak to our accelerated cycles of consumption and disposal.
