Park won the 2026 LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize for his unique layering technique, in which ceramic slip is applied to paper, stacked repeatedly, and fired in a kiln. The cylindrical works in red and yellow tones throughout the slides are products of this method: the paper burns away, leaving only clay to form the layers. Each layer is thin, but repetition creates solid structure. While LOEWE has long explored craft through leather, weaving time and material into fashion, Park builds an entirely different form of craft by stacking paper and clay.
The cross-section in the second slide, blending pink, orange, and yellow, resembles geological strata. Natural layers formed by time and artificial layers built by the artist mirror one another. The sculptural piece in the third image, combining blue and orange tones, features color blocking as pronounced as that of LOEWE's Puzzle or Flamenco bags. Time spent layering by hand manifests in color and form.
Two worlds showing time built by hand, each in different ways, can be seen at CASA LOEWE Seoul through September 20. Standing beside LOEWE bags, what layers will Park Jongjin's ceramics bring to mind for you?
