칠흑 같은 어둠 속에서 단 하나의 광원이 인물들을 비추고, 그 빛은 르네상스 회화 속 카라바조의 명암법처럼 극적인 대비를 만들어낸다. 흰색 시어 소재와 골드 코르셋이 조합된 드레이프 가운은 거의 종교적인 위엄을 부여하는데, 길게 늘어뜨린 베일과 함께 성화 속 성인처럼 보이기도 하고 동시에 세속적 권력의 상징처럼 읽히기도 한다. 바닥에는 철제 헬멧과 검, 붉은 벨벳과 황금빛 직물이 뒤섞여 흩어져 있고, 한쪽 구석 테이블 위에는 와인잔과 과일이 놓여 전쟁과 연회가 공존하는 중세 연극 무대 같은 분위기를 자아낸다. 한 인물은 무릎 꿇은 채 고개를 숙이고, 다른 이는 높은 곳에서 검을 내리며 권력의 수여 혹은 재판의 순간을 연출하는데, 이 장면은 고전 회화 속 '민중에게 고함(Ecce Populus)'이라는 제목처럼 관객을 향한 선언처럼 느껴진다. 올리브 그린 베스트와 검은 상의를 입은 인물의 등 뒤로 펼쳐진 어둠은 무대 밖 세계를 지우고, 오직 이 의식적 순간만을 강조하며 시선을 가둔다.
