Body dysmorphic disorder (bdd) is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder that "pushes" people to seek perfection (perkins, 2019). it affects around five million people in the
US alone. People with this disorder focus only on their flaws, by obsessively trying to hide them and eliminating any positive thoughts. In addition, the negativity that characterizes bdd interferes with the well-being of the person and with their basic activities of daily life. Nowadays, social media allows us to see ideal bodies and faces on social networks such as Instagram. we see influencers who tell us how to lose weight and get a perfect body, we use imaging effects to make ourselves look better in photographs and we reject our real appearance. a fact that exemplifies this is the increase of aesthetic operations since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic. the philosopher byung-chul han argues that video narcissism is interrelated with videodismorphy and, inculded, with the fatigue caused by the pandemic and that makes us an eternally tired society (el país, 2021).these people, including myself, feel bad about themselves. we have a very different rhythm of life from the rest and despite the information that exists about all this, we are not visible. we are seen as people who are irresponsible, in terms of work, family or daily activities, and we are valued lower than we already value ourselves. i am not diagnosed with this disorder, but i have the symptoms; i feel like them, i suffer like them and i am as misunderstood as they are. therefore, with my photography i want to show my world, my perspective, and i want to make this problem visible so that others see how i see myself; as well as reflecting the constant search for the perfect personal image, which this disorder and this digitized society is subjected to. it leads to a distorted image of reality and deformations that will be represented by mirrors. in conclusion, i want to show the relation between bdd, the search for perfection and the unreal demonstration of the body and the personal image.
