A. 안녕하세요! 최원빈이라고 합니당.

 

Q. 요즘 어떻게 지내고 있어요?

A. 해 떠 있을 때는 비타민 D 흡수하며 자전거 타고 서대문 문화체육회관으로 가서 저보다 더 건강하신 할머니들과 신나게 수영을 해요. 해가 지면 앨범 작업하고 책을 읽고, 주말에는 스네이크치킨스프 공연을 하거나 가끔 파티 가서 열심히 엉덩이 흔들며 살고 있습니다.

 

Q. 이번 촬영에서의 에피소드, TMI가 있다면?

A. 웨터 초창기 같이 작업했던 분이 해당 촬영장에 패션 에디터로 계셔서 오랜만에 인사를 나눴어요. 옛날 생각도 나고 감회가 새로웠습니다.

 

Q. 이번 촬영에서 ‘다른 이들의 영혼을 훔치는 일을 즐기는 악동 캐릭터’를 연기하셨죠. 실제로 원빈 님이 가장 악동스러워지는 순간은 언제일까요?

A. 악동 아닌 척 너무 오래 했을 때.

 

Q. 이번 촬영 캐릭터처럼 누군가의 어떠한 재능을 자유자재로 훔칠 수 있다면 어떤 재능이 가장 탐날 것 같아요?

A. 도파민 수용체 자유자재 조절능력.

 

Q. 평소 원빈 님의 추구미가 궁금해요. 원빈 님의 패션 철학에 가장 레퍼런스가 되어 주는 것은 무엇인가요?

A. 어찌 됐든 저찌 됐든 ‘록(Rock)’스러운가?

 

Q. 촬영장에 울려퍼진 노래 ‘Hate is all around’에는 “내 머리에 박힌 돌을 꺼내”라는 가사가 있죠. 요즘 원빈 님의 머릿속은 어때요? 아직 박힌 돌이 빠지지 않았나요?

A. 저 가사를 쓸 당시 박혀 있던 돌은 빠진 것 같은데, 그것마저 확신은 없고 현재는 새로운 돌이 껴 있네요.

 

Q. 평소 책을 즐겨 읽어요? 인스타그램 피드에서 우연히 쌓아 놓은 책 사진을 보았어요.

A. 네, 책 좋아해요. 저는 책을 즐겁게 읽기 위해 책 읽기 전에는 그보다 더 자극적인 일을 하지 않으려고 하는데, 그게 잘 안 될 때가 많아요.

 

Q. 원빈 님이 궁금해하던 것이 책에 나와 있던가요?

A. 처음에는 답을 얻으려고 책을 읽은 것이 맞지만 그런 의도가 있는 책 읽기는 오래 가지 못했어요. 그런 방식은 제가 원하는 답을 얻지 못할 시 그 시간들이 무가치하게 느껴져서요. 저는 운동도 그렇고 책 읽기도 마찬가지로 어떤 목적 없이 그 행위 자체에서 주는 건강함을 사랑합니다. 요즘은 어떤 답을 얻으려고 책을 읽기보다는 오히려 어떤 질문을 하며 살아가야 하는지를 X되는 작가, 형, 누나, 동생들에게 배우고 있는 중이에요.

 

Q. 제가 원빈 님을 처음 알게 된 것은 밴드 ‘웨터’의 최원빈이였어요. 오늘도 웨터 인스타그램 댓글창을 확인했는데, 돌아올 때까지 기다린다는 팬들의 댓글이 실시간으로 달리고 있더군요. 원빈 님에게 웨터는 어떤 의미를 가지나요?

A. 웨터는 저의 20대인 것 같아요. 여러 가지로 부족해서 여러 가지로 채우다보니 매일매일 어제보다 더 세고 자극적인 것을 찾아야 했던 시기였어요. 그 속에는 허영심과 과잉된 자의식, 과장된 반항심 같은 것들이 있었습니다. 그러면서 수익이 없어도 아랑곳하지 않고 계속해서 앨범을 만들고 공연했던 순수한 열정도 떠오르네요.
 
그 맛은 20대가 아니라면 절대 할 수 없는 에너지였다고 생각합니다. 웨터의 30대는 어떨지 궁금하기도 하면서 추억으로 남겨두고 싶기도 하고, 어디로 흘러 갈진 아직 저도 모르겠습니다. 무책임하게 들리겠지만 진짜 모르겠어요.

 

Q. 솔로 최원빈과 밴드 웨터의 최원빈, 차이점이 있다면요?

A. 지금 시점에서 돌아보면 웨터는 저를 포함한 멤버들이 좋아하는 록밴드들의 문화와 사운드를 계승하고 배우고 한국말로 바꾸는 작업이었다고 느껴져요. 솔로 작업들은 특정 문화와 사운드를 계승해 봤으니 “이제 그들도 못하는 나만 할 수 있는 것을 해 볼까?” 하는 태도의 차이점이 있는 것 같고요. 그래도 둘 다 여전히 록이라는 공통점이 있습니다.

 

Q. 최근 밴드 붐이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로 많은 밴드들이 대중들의 사랑을 받고 있어요. 대중들이 이토록 밴드에 열광 하는 이유는 무엇일까요?

A. 우선 저는 중고등학생 때부터 록 밴드를 좋아하다보니 자연스럽게 국내 밴드 신에 대해 집중하고 있었던 사람으로서 지금이 이례적으로 밴드 붐이 왔다는 것에는 동의하지 않아요. 특정 밴드들이 붐을 일으키는 일은 계속 있어 왔었지만 ‘힙합’처럼 장르 자체가 주류에 속해졌다고는 생각하지 않기 때문입니다. 
케이팝 이외에 주류 음악으로 올라왔던 힙합이 5년 내내 같은 말을 반복하고 다른 말 하는 애들 찾다보니 얻어걸린 것은 아닐지 몰라도 전 세계적으로 음악과 패션 등 돌고 도는 흐름 속에 지금이 밴드의 흐름인가 정도로 생각하고 있어요.
 
힙합이 주는 뜨거움이 말 그대로 이제 너무 뜨거워져서 록 음악이 주는 차가움으로 열을 식힐 때인 것 같다고 혼자 자위하고 있어요. 아직 한국에는 록스타 자리가 공석이라는 소문이 있어서 그 자리에 노크를 한번 해 볼까 생각 중입니다. 

 

Q. 정말 다양한 활동을 보여 주고 있잖아요. 최근 개인적으로 가장 심장 뛰었던 일이 있다면요?

A. 요즘 수영에 빠져서 동네 문화 회관에서 수영하고 있는데, 거기서 친해진 저보다 훨씬 건강하시고 건장하신 이순 할머님이 계속 젊은 놈이 자기보다 체력 없다고 놀리셔서 욱하는 마음에 안 쉬고 레일을 돌았는데 심장이 터져서 죽을 뻔했습니다.

 

Q. 음악 말고도 도전해 보고 싶은 또 다른 영역이 있어요?

A. 말로 어떻게 표현해야 할지 알 수 없는 생각들을 머릿속에 품고 있는 것이 너무 괴로워서 음악을 만들 때가 있어요. 그런데 음악에 있어서 기술적으로 부족한 탓인지 미처 다 표현하지 못한 말들을 모아서 책을 써 보고 싶기도 해요.
 
“뭘 그렇게 다 표현 하고 싶어 해~” 하면서 그냥 입 꾹 닫고 돈 주는 곳 아무 데나 가서 살아지는 대로 살기 등이 도전해 보고 싶은 또 다른 영역이네요.

 

Q. 조금 더 사적인 영역의 질문을 해 볼게요. 인간 최원빈은 어떤 사람인 것 같아요?

A. 아직 잘 모르겠어요. 아이유 님은 25살 때 자신을 이제야 알 것 같다고 가사에 썼는데 저는 아직도 모르겠네요. 모른다기보다는 계속 바뀌어서 어제는 알았는데 오늘은 모르겠어요. 아이유 님도 그럴걸요? 가사를 쓰던 그날 자기를 이제 알 것 같다고 느꼈을 뿐. 그래도 답변을 해 본다면 계속해서 자기 자신을 알아보려고 하는 사람인 것 같아요. 

 

Q. 원빈 님의 팬들은 어떤 사람이에요?

A. 사랑 그 잡채!

 

Q. 이 자리를 빌어 팬들에게 하고 싶은 말이 있다면.

A. 사랑해요, 잡채들. 곧 좋은 소식 들려드릴게요.

 

Q. 다음 행보에 대한 스포일러를 안 들어볼 수 없죠. 어떤 것들을 준비 중에 있어요?

A. 저의 첫 솔로 정규 앨범을 준비하고 있습니다. 15곡으로 구성되어 있고, 다양한 장르의 친구들이 함께 하다보니 제 나름 “한국말로 된 이런 앨범은 들어본 적이 없다”라는 귀여운 자신감 정도 있어요.
 
덧붙여 웨터의 처음을 함께 했던 친구들과 다시 만나 작업하고 있어요. 웨터의 처음을 기점으로 시간이 꽤 흘렀는데 각자 자기 포지션에서 월등히 업그레이드 되어있는 상태라 결과물이 무척 기대됩니다. 저희의 창작물을 제지하고 컨펌 하는 회사가 없는 상태라, 이번에 처음으로 완전한 자율성을 가진 상태인데 이게 득이 될지 실이 될지는 나와 봐야 알 것 같네요.

 

Q. 마지막으로 원빈 님이 살면서 꼭 지키고 싶은 것이 있다면 무엇일까요?

A. 지키고 싶었던 것이 파괴되고 박살나더라도 내일 다시 침대에서 일어나 새로 지키고 싶은 것을 찾는 힘을 꼭 지키고 싶어요.

Q. Self-introduction.

A. Hello! I'm Choi Wonvin.

 

Q. How are you doing these days?

A. When the sun is out, I absorb some vitamin D while riding my bike to the Seodaemun Culture and Sports Center to swim with healthier grandmothers than me. When the sun sets, I work on albums, read books, and on weekends, I either perform with Snake Chicken Soup or occasionally attend parties, shaking my booty vigorously.

 

Q. Episode from this shoot, if there's a TMI?

A. Someone I worked with in the early days of Wet'er was at the shoot as a fashion editor, and we had a chat after a long time. It brought back memories and felt refreshing.

 

Q. In this shoot, you played 'a villain character who enjoys stealing other people's souls'. In fact, when is the moment when Wonvin becomes the most vicious?

A. When I pretended not to be a troublemaker for too long.

 

Q. If you can steal someone's talent freely like this shooting character, which talent do you think will be the most coveted?

A. The ability to regulate dopamine receptors freely.

 

Q. I'm curious about Wonvin's pursuit. What is the most reference to Wonvin's fashion philosophy?

A. Rock-ish, regardless of how it turns out?

 

Q. The song 'Hate is all around' that echoed on the set has the lyrics, "Take out the stone stuck in my head." How is Wonvin's head these days? Hasn't the stuck stone fallen out yet?

A. The stone that was stuck in my head when I wrote those lyrics seems to have come out, but I'm not entirely sure, and now there seems to be a new stone in its place.

 

Q. Do you usually enjoy reading books? I saw a picture of a book that I accidentally stacked on my Instagram feed.

A. Yes, I enjoy reading books. I often try to do something more stimulating than reading before diving into a book, but that doesn't always work out.

 

Q. Was what Wonvin was curious about in the book?

A. Initially, I read books to find answers, but I couldn't keep up with reading books with that intent for long. Such an approach made me feel that the time spent was worthless if I didn't find the answers I wanted. Like exercising, I love reading books not for any specific purpose but for the healthiness it brings in itself. These days, instead of trying to find answers through reading, I'm learning from authors, brothers, sisters, and friends about what questions to ask in life.

 

Q. The first time I got to know Wonvin was Choi Wonvin of the band 'Wetter'. I checked the Wetter Instagram comment window again today, and the fans' comments that they wait until they come back are running in real time. What does the wetter mean to Mr. Wonvin?

A. Wetter feels like my 20s. It was a time when I was trying to fill various voids and sought something more stimulating every day. It was filled with vanity, excessive self-consciousness, and exaggerated rebellion.
 
Alongside, there was a pure passion that kept making albums and performing without caring about profits. I think that energy was something that only the 20s could bring. I'm curious about what Wetter's 30s will be like, and while I want to preserve it as a memory, I honestly don't know where it'll go. It might sound irresponsible, but I truly don't know.

 

Q. What are the differences between solo artist Choi Wonvin and Choi Wovin from the band Wetter?

A. Looking back at it now, I feel like Wetter was about inheriting and learning from the culture and sound of rock bands that my bandmates and I love, and then translating that into Korean. My solo work, on the other hand, has been more about thinking, "Now that they can't do what only I can, should I give it a try?" There's a difference in attitude there. But both still share the commonality of being rooted in rock.

 

Q. There's been quite a boom in bands recently, to the point where it's not an exaggeration to call it a band craze. Why do you think bands are receiving so much love from the public?

A. Firstly, I don't agree that we're in an unprecedented band boom, as someone who has been focusing on the domestic band scene since high school. While certain bands have been able to create a buzz, I don't think the genre itself has become mainstream like hip-hop, for example.
 
Hip-hop, which had risen to prominence outside of K-pop, has been repeating the same thing for five years, searching for those who say one thing and then another. While I might not have been caught up in it, I see the current band trend as part of the global flow of music, fashion, and other cultural elements.
 
It feels like hip-hop's heat has become too intense, and now it's time to cool off with the chill of rock music. There's a rumor that the position of a rock star in Korea is vacant, so I'm considering knocking on that door. 

 

Q. You're showcasing a wide range of activities. What's something recently that has excited you the most personally?

A. I've been really into swimming lately, and I've been swimming at the local cultural center. There, I met Grandma Lee, who is much healthier and stronger than me, and she kept teasing me about how the young lad has less stamina than her. I got annoyed and kept swimming without resting, and my heart almost exploded from the exertion.

 

Q. Apart from music, is there another field you'd like to venture into?

A. I have these thoughts that I can't express in words, and they torment me. Sometimes, when making music, I feel like I haven't fully expressed those thoughts, so I'd like to write a book, gathering those unexpressed words.
 
When people ask, "Why do you want to express so much?" I just want to shut them up and go anywhere I can make money to survive. So, living freely without any constraints is another area I'd like to challenge myself in.

 

Q. I'll ask a more personal question. What kind of person do you think Choi Wonvin is?

A. I'm not sure yet. IU wrote in her lyrics that she felt like she only got to know herself at 25, but I still don't know. It's not that I don't know, but rather that I keep changing, so what I knew yesterday, I don't know today. Maybe IU feels the same way? She probably just felt like she got to know herself on the day she wrote those lyrics. But if I were to answer, I think I'm someone who keeps trying to understand myself.

 

Q. What kind of people are Wonvin's fans?

A. It means love itself

A. I love you. I'll share some good news with you soon.

 

Q. I can't resist asking for a spoiler about your next move. What are you preparing for?

A. I'm preparing for my first solo full-length album. It consists of 15 songs, and with the diverse range of friends in different genres joining me, I have a cute confidence that this album, in Korean, is something that hasn't been heard before.
 
Additionally, I'm working again with friends who were there from the beginning of Wetter. It's been quite some time since Wetter's inception, and everyone has significantly upgraded themselves in their respective positions, so I'm very excited about the outcome. Since we don't have a company to restrict us or give confirmation, this is the first time we have complete autonomy, and whether it will be a gain or a loss remains to be seen.

 

Q. Finally, is there something you definitely want to uphold in your life?

A. Even if what I wanted to uphold is destroyed and shattered, I want to maintain the strength to get up from bed the next day and find something new to uphold.
